Panasonic Backs Heritage Photographic Project

Panasonic is backing 'OUR PLACE - The World's Heritage', a project that will create the largest ever photographic collection of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The photographs will be published under the OUR PLACE brand in an initial series of 10 books that will be released over the next five years. A team of international photographers will cover the sites from their physical and geographical aspects, as well as documenting the human presence and interaction that helps make them important to mankind. An interactive website will be launched next year when enough images are available. As well as a selection of site photographs www.ourplaceworldheritage.com will feature background information relevant to the sites' history and values. The Panasonic supported project will eventually have an international team of 20 photographers, who will be photographing a large number of the 830 World Heritage Sites in 138 countries around the globe.

Pentax releases Optio T20, K10D digital cameras

The Optio T20 compact digital camera sports a slim body, the Pentax-developed Sliding Lens System and a 3-inch, high-definition LCD monitor. Featuring 7.0 megapixels and a 3X zoom, the latest model in the Pentax T series allows users to select and confirm functions directly on the LCD monitor with a touch or with a stylus. The LCD monitor serves up 230,000 pixels and a wide viewing field. The Optio T20 will cost US$349.95 and go on sale next month.

The K10D digital SLR camera with 10.2 effective megapixels boasts several advanced technologies including a Pentax-developed Shake Reduction (SR) system and a weather-resistant body. The SR systemeffectively offers a 2.5 to 4 stop advantage for sharp, blur-free images even under difficult shooting conditions, such as macro and telephoto photography or low light settings without a flash, according to the folks at Pentax.

TI Leverages DaVinci For Digital Still Cameras

Texas Instruments Incorporated has utilised its DaVinci technology, based on an ARM core, to introduce an optimised digital still camera (DSC) silicon with a production- ready reference design that will offer an increase in the core and advanced features to develop digital cameras priced as low as $99.

"TI has focused on the high-end camera market in the past, but with the introduction of this new DaVinci technology and reference design, TI is now bringing its expertise to the low-cost camera space," said Marcelo Vieira, general manager, digital camera solutions group, TI. "This reference design will allow customers to quickly create multiple cameras to offer to consumers in a very short timeframe."

The technology includes a highly flexible processor, software with enhanced post-processing algorithms and development framework; the reference design includes a suite of development tools, software and technical support.

Leica announces two new digital cameras

Leica has upgraded its D-Lux line with the addition of a 10MP high-end camera and has also announced a 10MP EVF camera that has got an inbuilt 12x optical zoom lens. Many of Leica's recent offerings seem to be virtual clones of Panasonic cameras and these two new additions are no different. The Leica V-Lux 1 represents the first EVF model offered by the company and many of its features seem to mirror the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ50K. The model boasts of an in-built 35-420mm f/2.8-3.7 ASPH lens and a 10MP sensor. .

Fujifilm has announced the Finepix S5 Pro, a professional quality digital SLR, and the Finepix F31fd, the first compact camera to feature their face-detection system. The Finepix S5 Pro will be available in early 2007 and the Finepix F31fd will be available in December for $399.

The Finepix F31fd is a minor upgrade to the Finepix F30. The F31fd features the same 6.3 megapixel capture resolution, 3x optical zoom Fujinon lens, and 2.5 inch LCD. As noted with the "fd" in the model name, the F31fd features Fujifilm Facial Detection system. This camera is the first compact/pocketable camera to feature this technology from Fujifilm. The Finepix F31fd will be available in December for a retail price of $399.

IEEE Begins Work on Battery Standard for Digital Cameras ...

September 29, 2006 -- The rapid growth of digital cameras and camcorders is driving enhanced performance requirements for batteries, prompting the IEEE to begin a new standard to make them more robust and reliable.

The standard, IEEE P1825, "Rechargeable Batteries for Digital Cameras and Camcorders" will be created within the IEEE Standards Association corporate program as part of the IEEE Livium family of battery standards.

IEEE P1825 will set uniform criteria for the design, production and evaluation of the lithium-ion and lithium-ion polymer batteries used in digital cameras and camcorders. The overriding goal of the standard is to enhance the experience consumers have when operating these devices.

The standard will address areas such as battery pack electrical and mechanical construction, packaging technologies, and pack and cell charge and discharge controls.
